TikTok to close its operations amid security concerns

OTTAWA: Canada has ordered TikTok to cease operations within the country, citing national security risks identified by Canadian intelligence agencies during a comprehensive review.

This move follows earlier steps by the Canadian government to ban TikTok from official devices, mirroring similar actions taken by the US. The government hasn’t outright banned the app, but TikTok must wind down all business activities in Canada.

Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that the decision was based on evidence collected during the review and advice from Canada’s security and intelligence community.

However, TikTok plans to challenge Canada’s order in court, just as it’s doing with the US ban. A company spokesperson expressed concern that shutting down TikTok’s Canadian offices would destroy hundreds of well-paying local jobs, emphasizing that the platform will remain available for creators and businesses.

This development is part of a broader debate on TikTok’s operations worldwide. Other nations are considering similar actions, weighing potential privacy risks associated with the app.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how well TikTok will function in Canada with its operations ceased.
