QUETTA: Students of Turbat University in Kech district of Balochistan have taken a big stride by launching an innovative mobile application called “Shanakht” for the police department of the district.

It is aimed at providing the police with instant detailed information about the suspects in criminal activities or fugitives. “Shanakht” has to see as a great tool for bringing offenders to book.

Designed as a crime prevention tool, “Shanakht” took four months to develop and is now officially handed over to the District Kech Police. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Kech has praised the students who invented it for their diligence and awarded certificates acknowledging their ingenuity.

This goes back to another achievement in 2022, when the Sindh police launched the ‘Talash’ app- which was aimed at combating the increasing street crimes in Karachi with the support of modern equipment to improve policing.

The ‘Talash’ app was launched by Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon at the Central Police Office in Karachi and has been hailed as an “effective tool” against crime. It allows users to access information from Nadra, among others, and contains data regarding 1.5 million criminals in the province.

Also, it could be used to determine the verification of wanted criminals, removing fake registration plates and tracing suspects on bail.

This, in tandem with the launching of other applications, is another reminder that technology is a critical aid in crime prevention, and authorities should continue to learn ways of preempting criminals.

In this way, police will be able to curb crimes happening and prevent their occurrence altogether. The “Shanakht” app and the “Talash” app are just two examples where technology is being harnessed so that policing becomes a little better-off and communities relatively safer.
