ISLAMABAD: From 10 Muharram (Ashura), WhatsApp services are down on cellular networks for millions of users across Pakistan.
The issue has emerged as a widespread inconvenience for mobile data-only users, with most cases reported so far for Jazz, Telenor, Ufone and Zong users.
Many users have reported on social media that WhatsApp calls and text messages are working normally while media files like videos and images are not being processed/loaded normally. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is fully functional and working smoothly for wired broadband (WiFi) users.
Media loading problem was highest during working hours after Day of Ashura. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not issued a statement to explain why the issue has persisted for so long.
Major cellular mobile operators are currently investigating the matter.
The problem had previously spread to other Metaverse apps, namely Instagram and Facebook, with several users posting on X and LinkedIn that the social apps were crashing multiple times a day. The disruption is now limited to WhatsApp services for most mobile network users.
Earlier this week, local authorities banned Facebook without any official announcement leading to difficulties for users to access the social media platform from various Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Downdetector showed at the time that the ban also affected Instagram and WhatsApp.
