Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched the Roshan Pankha program launched across Pakistan to replace 10 million old and inefficient fans with energy-saving models. The initiative aims to help households save up to Rs. 12,000 per fan in monthly electricity costs.

The launch event included Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Leghari, Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik, and NEECA Managing Director Dr. Sardar Moazzam Humayun Khan. They briefed attendees on how the program will roll out within 90 days and its benefits for low-income families.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Malik emphasized that high electricity bills and recurring floods have heavily affected citizens, especially during summer. He noted that floods over the past four to five years have caused around 6,000 deaths, displaced millions, and resulted in economic losses equaling nearly 9.8 percent of Pakistan’s GDP.

He said the Roshan Pankha program would reduce electricity consumption and lower bills, while also supporting businesses by allowing them to operate more shifts efficiently.

Energy Minister Sardar Leghari highlighted that the initiative aligns with long-term reforms in the power sector. He mentioned that electricity demand has declined due to increased solar adoption, and overall electricity prices have dropped by 20 percent. Industrial tariffs have fallen by 35 percent over two years, reaching 11.5 cents per unit, with further rationalization expected.

The program allows consumers to replace or sell old fans. Leghari added that this step would ease the national grid’s load, avoid building new power plants, and ensure existing plants meet electricity demand for the next 25 to 30 years.

The government also plans to achieve 90 percent clean energy generation by 2034 and gradually rationalize solar tariffs, with NEPRA reviewing related measures.

The Roshan Pankha program launched is expected to provide immediate relief to households while supporting Pakistan’s broader energy and environmental goals.
