NDMA issues flash flood alert amid heavy rainfall

ISLAMABAD: The National Emergency Operation Center of NDMA has issued an alert in view of the possibility of a flood situation in the upper parts of the country from June 10 to 15.

The current situation is exactly in line with the weather forecast issued by NEOC 3 to 4 months ago, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated.

The ongoing weather situation in the country is exactly in line with the advance alerts issued by NEOC. There is a possibility of a flash flood situation at the local level due to possible rain with wind and thunder in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir.

There is a possibility of flash flooding in rivers and rainwater channels due to rain in hilly areas. Flash floods may occur in Chitral, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, and Mansehra of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Local floods may occur in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Rawalakot of Azad Kashmir. There is a risk of flooding in rivers and canals in the areas of Gips Yasin, Ghizer, Diamer, Tangir, Daril, and Gilgit of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Citizens living near low-lying areas, rivers, and canals should take precautionary measures. Tourists and travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous areas during heavy rains.

District administration and relief agencies are instructed to keep emergency teams and dewatering machinery ready. In view of the risk of possible flooding in urban areas, instructions are given to ensure the cleanliness of drainage systems and canals.

NEOC has also issued an alert of the risk of landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan and adjacent mountainous areas from June 12 to 15.

Temporary closures and travel difficulties are expected at various places on the Karakoram Highway and Jaglot-Skardu Road.

Increased risks are likely at Chilas, Bashidas, Thalpan, Shingas Nallah, Shaitan Nallah, Chamacho, Tarmak Nallah, and other sensitive places.

Landslides are likely from mountain slopes in the Attabad Tunnel, Shimshal, Khawlu, and areas of East Baltistan. Emergency relief teams have been instructed to remain alert for immediate response and keep necessary machinery ready.

Residents of vulnerable areas should follow local administration and weather advisories.
