WASA imposes rain emergency in twin cities as Monsoon rains begin

RAWALAPINDI: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi and elevated its alert level amidst continued heavy rain in the twin cities.

The move was made after a prediction by the Meteorological Department for ongoing and heavy rainfall throughout the day.

Both cities have received more than 35mm of rain, with individual readings as follows: Saidpur 31mm, Golra 23mm, Bokra 35mm, and Pirwadhai 33mm.

Taking into account the rain emergency of Rawalpindi, heavy machinery and personnel have been put in place in low-level areas, whereas special focus is being given to the Committee Chowk underpass and Murree Road, where machines are already placed.

The recent rain has also contributed to the increase in water levels in Rawal and Khanpur dams, leading to a better supply of clean drinking water, stated the PMD.

WASA officials also verified that the desilting of Nullah Leh and other drains was done in advance of the rain spell in good time.

WASA officials are keeping a close eye on all the major drains, with Nullah Lai, which is currently at normal level. Water levels at Katarian have risen to seven feet, and at Gawalmandi Bridge to six feet.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain, along with gusty winds and thundershowers at scattered places, in Islamabad, Upper Punjab, and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The ongoing rain spell is forecast to continue until July 1.

In light of the likely weather pattern, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued an advisory until July 1, urging authorities to keep themselves ready for any weather-related emergencies.
