DHAKA: Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has resigned from his post. According to a foreign news agency, 76-year-old Mohammad Shahabuddin had been serving as president since April 2023.

Shahabuddin’s 5-year term was to end in 2028, and opposition parties had also been demanding his resignation for a long time. Shahabuddin was considered a close ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Shahabuddin said in a statement that he was diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy in a recent medical examination. Due to this disease, he sometimes experiences sudden short-term loss of consciousness, which is why he decided to step down.

A statement issued by the president’s press secretary said that the speaker of the national parliament will perform the duties of the president until the election of a new president.

According to the Bangladeshi constitution, Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed will assume the responsibilities as the interim president, and a new president will be elected within the next 90 days.

According to a foreign news agency, the resignation came at a time when news was circulating in the local media that Shahabuddin had spoken to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is absconding in India, on the phone during a visit to the UK for medical treatment in May this year.
