TORRENTO: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation, here on Monday

According to international media reports, Trudeau said he would resign after the ruling Liberal Party elects a new leader.

Facing growing pressure from Liberal lawmakers amid falling poll numbers, Trudeau revealed during a press conference that parliament would remain suspended until March. This timeline ensures that Trudeau will still be in office on January 20, when US President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated. Trump’s threats to impose tariffs pose significant risks to the Canadian economy.

Trudeau, 53, first took office as prime minister in 2015 and successfully won two consecutive elections. However, his popularity began to decline two years ago due to public dissatisfaction with rising prices and a severe housing shortage.

With the Liberals predicted to suffer a significant defeat in the upcoming election against the opposition Conservatives, Trudeau’s departure signals a crucial moment for the party as it attempts to recover from a slump in public support.
