ISLAMABAD: Recent developments indicate a growing trend of religious and political influence within the Indian Armed Forces under the (Bharatiya Janata Party) BJP government.

Critics say the military is increasingly adopting Hindu nationalist symbolism, rituals, and political messaging, raising concerns about its neutrality and secular character.

Key developments include replacing historic war artwork with Hindu-themed paintings, naming military operations using Hindu religious terms, and senior officers publicly participating in Hindu ceremonies. Recruitment and training institutions, such as the Agnipath scheme and Sainik Schools, are reportedly influenced by Hindu nationalist networks, shaping the future officer cadre.

Minority officers, including Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs, report discrimination and pressure to conform to Hindu rituals, with some facing career setbacks or dismissal. Human Rights Watch has documented custodial deaths and abuses linked to these ideological shifts.

Analysts warn that these changes compromise the professionalism, cohesion, and secular foundations of the armed forces, linking India’s military increasingly to majoritarian political agendas.
