Former Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad released from hospital

KUALA LUMPUR: Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s longest-serving former prime minister, has been discharged from the National Heart Institute after receiving treatment for a lower respiratory infection.

Mahathir Mohamad’s aide confirmed the news, stating that Mahathir is all well now and would attend a pending court hearing for a defamation case he filed against the country’s deputy prime minister on Tuesday.

The former Malaysian PM was hospitalized on October 15 due to coughing caused by the infection. This marked his latest hospital visit, as he has struggled with heart problems and other health issues in recent years. He spent nearly three months in the hospital earlier this year.

Despite his health challenges, Mahathir remains an influential figure in Malaysian politics. After leading the country for over two decades, first from 1981 to 2003 and then again in 2018 at the remarkable age of 92, Mahathir continues to voice his opinions and critique current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Mahathir’s remarkable career has left an indelible mark on Malaysia. During his tenure, he implemented various economic and infrastructure development projects, transforming Malaysia into a modern nation. Although his coalition collapsed two years after his second term began, and he lost his parliamentary seat in 2022, Mahathir’s legacy endures.
