NEW YORK: Renowned journalist Mehdi Hasan came to the defense of the Muslim call to prayer in the US, claiming that if church bells can ring, Muslims too should be permitted to make the call to prayer.

This Statement came after the US Congressman Brandon Gill, reacting sarcastically, tweeted on X that immigrants are “fundamentally changing the landscape of American public life.”

Hasan then remarked that Gill’s wife, Danielle D’Souza Gill, is of Indian origin.

In response, Gill wrote, “My wife is a Christian, and she also doesn’t want to listen to your oppressive Muslim call to prayer. If you want to live in a Muslim country, go back to the UK.”

This conversation went viral on social media and drew mixed reactions from users.

This is not the first time Gill has been in the news for making controversial statements. Earlier, he ridiculed Indian-origin Democrat Zahran Mamdani for consuming rice with his hands and said, “Civilized people in America don’t eat like this.” The statement caused anger, particularly because his own wife is of Indian origin.

In response to the backlash, Danielle D’Souza Gill made a distance from Indian food ways, claiming that she “always uses a fork” and positioning herself as a “Christian mega-patriot.”
