NEW YORK: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been brought before a federal court in Manhattan, New York.

Earlier, Maduro and his wife were transferred from Brooklyn to Manhattan by helicopter, from where they were taken to court in an armored vehicle.

According to US media, Maduro will be tried on charges of drug trafficking and terrorism.

Maduro and his wife were arrested during a US military operation in Venezuela on Saturday.

According to US authorities, after their arrest, they were brought to US territory so that legal proceedings could be completed.

On the other hand, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has temporarily assumed presidential duties under a court order. She rejected US President Donald Trump’s recent statement and called for the immediate release of President Nicolas Maduro.

During her address to the nation, Delcy Rodriguez said that Nicolas Maduro is the only and constitutional president of Venezuela and his arrest is actually tantamount to kidnapping.

He made it clear that Venezuela will never become a colony of any foreign power.
