NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Modi is likely to skip the G7 summit for the first time in six years due to India’s tense relations with Canada.
This will be the first G7 summit since 2019 that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend due to the political situation in the country after Pakistan shot down a Rafale and five other jets during a clash.
Sikh separatists based in Canada have expressed their anger at the Canadian government for inviting Modi as the Indian government was not cooperating with the Canadian government in the investigation into the death of Sikh leader Najjar in Canada. The Sikhs claimed that the Modi government was behind the murder.
Moreover, the situation within the country was also forcing Modi to reconsider his participation in the event.
According to India Today, there has been no official confirmation from the Indian government yet, but sources in the administration say that Modi cannot attend the summit due to internal political situations.
Moreover, the Canadian side has not contacted India regarding the visit and the Indian side does not intend to attend it.
In case of a final decision on the non-participation of the Indian Prime Minister in the G7, this will be the first G7 meeting for an Indian leader since India was invited to participate in the format in 2019.
Last year, the Indian Prime Minister attended the G7 summit in Hiroshima, where he held bilateral meetings with the leaders of the US, France and Japan. India, although not a member of the G7, is regularly invited to attend expanded meetings.
