MOSCOW: The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the British charge d’affaires and ordered a British diplomat to leave the country within two weeks on charges of espionage.
The diplomat tried to obtain information about the Russian economy, and the Russian security service said it had found evidence of espionage. Last week, Britain stopped several Russian merchant ships. Britain has stepped up operations against Russia’s shadow fleet, increasing the powers of its forces and giving its forces the authority to stop and board sanctioned ships passing through British waters.
The move was aimed at reducing Russia’s financial resources for the ongoing war in Ukraine.
