RIYADH: Saudi authorities have urged Muslims performing Umrah to avoid crowds and maintain physical distance while performing prayers at Mecca’s Grand Mosque.

The Ministry of Hajj emphasized that physical distancing reduces the risk of spreading infectious diseases and helps prevent respiratory infections.

In a post on X, the ministry said, “Avoidance of falsehood ensures a safe Umrah.”

The ministry has also consistently recommended that worshipers wear face masks at both Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Nabawi in Madinah to protect themselves from viral and respiratory diseases.

Pilgrims are further advised to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather, by drinking plenty of water.

This year’s Umrah season, which runs year-round, began in late June after the annual Hajj, attended by about 1.8 million Muslims from around the world.

According to Saudi officials, about 13.5 million Muslims performed Umrah last year, with plans to host 15 million pilgrims next year.

Female pilgrims no longer need to be accompanied by a male guardian.

Muslims holding various types of entry visas, including personal, visit and tourist visas, are now allowed to perform Umrah and visit Al-Rawadah Al-Sharifah, where the Prophet’s tomb is located in Masjid Nabawi. Madinah, after booking an e-appointment.

Additionally, Saudi citizens can invite their friends from abroad to visit the Kingdom and perform Umrah.
