ISLAMABAD: Through its introduction of the Digital Nomad Visa program, Sri Lanka aims to attract international remote workers and increase tourism.
The visa allows eligible professionals to stay and work remotely in Sri Lanka for one year with the option to extend their stay. Applicants must be at least 18, earn income exclusively from overseas, and work for foreign companies or clients.
Visa holders can rent property, open bank accounts, enroll children in private schools, and use local services and co-working spaces. Local employment remains prohibited for them. The visa fee for the first year is $500.
The Sri Lankan government has extended its tourist visa from 90 days to 180 days. Travelers can apply online via the Electronic Tourist Visa Activation System, with fees depending on nationality. SAARC nationals pay $70, other visitors pay $85, and select bilateral partners, including Singapore and the Maldives, pay $50.
The government aims to attract tourists who stay longer and digital professionals while safeguarding employment opportunities for local workers. Sri Lanka joins a growing list of countries offering digital nomad visas following global trends in remote work and flexible travel.
