DUBAI: A public holiday has been declared in the UAE on the 1st of Muharram Al-Haram, and government and private sector employees will get a 3-day long weekend.
According to details, the UAE government has declared a public holiday across the country on Monday, June 15, to mark the start of the new Islamic year (Hijri year 1448).
After this decision, employees in both the government and private sectors will get 3 consecutive days of holiday.
Emirati media reported that the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources issued a formal notification on Wednesday confirming that federal government employees will be on holiday on Monday, June 15, in celebration of the new Hijri year.
Since Saturday and Sunday are regular weekly holidays in the Emirates, the inclusion of Monday’s holiday will allow employees to enjoy a 3-day long break (weekend) and return to work on Tuesday, June 16.
The Islamic New Year, also known as the beginning of the Hijri year, begins on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the lunar calendar. This day commemorates the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from Mecca to Medina.
The day is celebrated with religious devotion and prayers in the Muslim world, including the United Arab Emirates.
