Vietnam floods kill 55, thousands affected

HANOI: Floods and landslides have killed 55 people in Vietnam so far.

The death toll from torrential rains, floods and landslides in central Vietnam has risen to 55, with 13 people missing, according to media reports, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Emergency Management Agency.

Rainfall in parts of central Vietnam has exceeded 1,900 millimeters (74.8 inches) over the past week. The region is a major coffee-producing belt and is home to popular beaches.

Nearly half of the deaths occurred in Dak Lak province, where 27 people have died, while 14 people have died in Khanh Hoa province.

According to official figures, the floods have caused economic losses of about 8.98 trillion dong ($445 million).

Vietnam’s disaster agency said more than 235,000 homes have been flooded and nearly 80,000 acres of crops have been damaged.
