KARACHI: In a technological move, the Karachi-based automaker and importer Dewan Farooque Motors Limited has declared its intention to construct Chinese electric vehicles domestically. These trucks, called “Kama,” are expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2025.
The diesel-powered Shehzore model serves as a solid foundation for the Kama electric vehicle, according to Kashif Riaz, Director of Projects at Dewan Farooque Motors. The trucks will be locally assembled prior to the formal launch, and fully constructed units (CBUs) have already arrived in Pakistan for testing.
The design of this light commercial vehicle is intended to be both economical and ecologically sustainable. It solves the excessive fuel consumption typically associated with commercial trucks, greatly reducing operating costs, and has a 300-kilometer range and fast charging capabilities.
Launched in 2019, Pakistan’s National Electric Vehicles Policy (NEVP) establishes challenging goals for EV uptake. By 2030, it wants 30% of all passenger and heavy-duty truck sales to be electric, with a greater target of 90% by 2040. These objectives are met by the Kama truck, which is a significant milestone in Pakistan’s shift to environmentally friendly transportation.
Riaz emphasized Pakistan’s enormous potential for producing electric vehicles. He pointed out that the nation possesses the infrastructure, trained labor force, and resources necessary to accomplish 100% localized production.
Pakistan might become a global exporter of electric vehicles and parts by doing away with the need for conventional engines and gearboxes thanks to its plentiful lithium resources and capacity to manufacture batteries domestically.
He also underlined the potential for World Bank carbon credits as well as the financial and environmental advantages of widespread EV adoption. To promote and speed up domestic EV production, Riaz asked for more robust government assistance, such as more duty exemptions.
