Electricity prices likely to rise by Rs. 1.73 unit

ISLAMABAD: Consumers across Pakistan, including those who are served by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and Karachi’s power network , could soon face yet another bump in electricity bills.

As per reports , the petition has been filed with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority for the April 2026 fuel charges adjustment.

A public hearing is scheduled for June 2, and if it is approved, the added charges are likely to show up in the electricity bills issued in June, not before.

This proposal comes only weeks after consumers got marginal relief of one paisa per unit in the May bills under the March 2026 fuel adjustment.

Still , the newest request suggests renewed pressure on electricity users, who are already juggling inflation , higher fuel prices, and general household expenses, and it’s not exactly comfortable.

Officials said the adjustment was worked out using changes in international fuel prices, electricity generation costs, and the country’s energy mix during April.

Pakistan’s power sector leans heavily on imported fuels, including LNG and coal, which means electricity tariffs remain sensitive to global energy market volatility Industry analysts said that monthly fuel adjustments are becoming a major, ongoing issue for both domestic customers and industrial consumers, since repeated revisions create a kind of uncertainty about utility expenses.

In other words , the fuel cost adjustment mechanism lets power companies pass alterations in generation costs straight to consumers, after getting regulatory approval.

The latest development arrives as Pakistan continues negotiations and energy sector reforms connected to international financial commitments, and it seems the costs keep coming in waves, not always in the same direction.
