LAHORE: The government has abolished the facility of free electricity units for government officers, and they will now receive electricity bills like ordinary consumers.

In a private television channel program, sources said that LESCO has already withdrawn the free electricity units for officers from Grade 18 to 20.

Officers from 18 to 20 of LESCO have got electricity bills for the first time, and reports suggest that nearly half of their salary is being spent on their electricity bills after elimination of decades-long perk.

Sources in LESCO said that Grade 18 officers previously used to get6000unitsof electricity free, Grade 19 officers were entitled to8,000 units, while Grade 20 officers got 10,000 units of free electricity per annum.

Sources further added that it was being applied for by Grade 18 to Grade 20 officers of other DISCOs, but it got a stay order from the courts.

The officers have argued that the rest of the DISCOs have continued with the facility because of court stay orders; LESCO officers argued that it is unlawful that the rest of the DISCOs have the free units perk. According to LESCO officials, all the benefits have been given in the form of salary.

The officers have urged theMinistryof Energyto abolish all the free electricity units for all officers of the public institutions across the country.
