Heavy monsoon rains claim 44 lives in Bangladesh, One million affected

DHAKA: At least 44 people have died in various accidents due to heavy monsoon rains, floods and landslides in Bangladesh, while more than 1 million people have been affected.

The worst-affected areas include Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Molvi Bazar, and Habiganj.

Due to heavy rains, several roads and bridges have been destroyed, thousands of houses have been submerged, and relief activities are facing difficulties.

According to officials, about 268,000 families have been directly affected by the floods. The Bangladesh army, navy, and other relief agencies are busy transporting food, drinking water, and medical aid to remote areas through boats.

Several people have also lost their lives due to landslides in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. There is a risk of more landslides due to incessant rains, in view of which people are being transferred from sensitive areas.

My prayers are with all the homeless and affected people.

Ishaq Dar said that he pays tribute to the services of rescue personnel, armed forces, medical teams, and relief workers.

Ishaq Dar further said that he expresses his full solidarity with the government and people of Bangladesh and stands with them, praying for the success of the ongoing rescue and relief operations and the safety of the affected people.
