Massive wheat shortage detected in govt warehouses across KP

PESHAWAR: A large quantity of wheat has been revealed to be missing from government wheat reserves in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On which the Food Department has launched an investigation.

According to reports, a letter sent by the Bannu Food Department in April 2026 stated that during the recent inspection of the godowns of Nar Hafizabad, another 123.171 metric tons of wheat were found to be missing. This is the fifth report of shortage from this storage center.

After the recent revelation, the total shortage of wheat in the Provincial Reserve Center Bannu has increased to 391.176 metric tons.

According to official documents, 74.292 metric tons of wheat were found missing from godown number 8, 25.727 metric tons from godown number 9, while 23.152 metric tons of wheat were found missing from godown number 3. Which was officially owned by the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASCO).

A senior officer of the food department termed the recurring shortage as extremely worrying, saying that a shortage of about 268 metric tons of wheat had been reported earlier.

On the other hand, 633,200 metric tons of wheat was also revealed to be missing from the Provincial Reserve Center in Swat.

According to the inspection report, thousands of bags were missing from the Takha Bond warehouses, contrary to the records, while some warehouses were found completely empty. Many bags had reached in an unusable condition due to long-term storage.

According to the director of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Department, special audits have been started in all districts. And special committees have been formed to investigate.

He clarified that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible if irregularities or corruption are found.
