Rs 2.5 billion Iranian currency smuggling bid foiled at Quetta station

QUETTA: An attempt to smuggle Iranian currency worth Rs 2 billion through date boxes through Jaffar Express was foiled.

According to details, law enforcement agencies at Quetta Railway Station took timely action and foiled a major attempt to smuggle Iranian currency through a train.

During the operation, Iranian currency worth Rs 2.5 billion was recovered from the possession of a passenger.

Officials said that on a tip-off, a snap check was conducted at Quetta Railway Station, where a suspected passenger going to Lahore through Jaffar Express was stopped. Upon search, a large amount of Iranian Rials was recovered from the suspect’s luggage.

The smuggler had skillfully hidden the Iranian currency notes in date boxes to avoid legal capture.

Officials say that the value of the recovered currency in the global market is about Rs 2.5 billion.

The police have taken the suspect into custody and shifted him to an unknown location for further investigation to trace other members of this smuggling network. According to initial investigation, this currency was being smuggled from Quetta to Lahore.
