ISLAMABAD: Addressing the Pakistan Governance Forum event in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the government will take strict measures to stop indirect tax evasion.
He announced that direct taxes will be reduced in the upcoming budget. The aim is to reduce the financial burden on the common man.
The Prime Minister said that in June 2023, the country’s economy was under severe pressure. At that time, Pakistan was close to bankruptcy.
The government took difficult decisions. Due to these decisions, the economy was brought under control. Reforms were made in corruption-affected institutions.
He said that corruption had become common in utility stores. These institutions were closed during Ramadan. Action was also taken against electricity theft. Electricity theft worth about Rs 200 billion was controlled. The price of electricity was reduced by Rs 7 per unit. He said that the PWD was also abolished. There was pressure on this decision, but reforms continued.
According to the Prime Minister, the overall economic situation of the country is now better than before. The interest rate has come down from 22 percent to single digits. He said that the government will put the country on a strong economic footing through further reforms.
