LAHORE: In a recent health hazard, a second patient has died at Mayo Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, due to the alleged adverse effects of a substandard injection given for lung infections.
This brings the death toll to two, raising serious questions about medical safety. Dr. Ehtesham-ul-Haq, MS Mayo Hospital, confirmed a 26-year-old Daulat Khan was admitted to the hospital for surgery and died later at night due to the substandard injection.
The incident took place in the chest ward, with an emergency meeting convened at the hospital involving Secretary Health Punjab Azmat Mehmood, Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University, COO Mayo Hospital, and MS Mayo Hospital.
At least 18 patients are alleged to be affected by the injection, compelling the hospital to banish its use altogether.
In response to the incident, Mayo Hospital Chief Executive Officer Professor Haroon Hamid has formed a committee to probe into the whole affair, which is expected to submit its report by 11 am today.
Additionally, the Punjab Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Department has already set up a separate body to investigate the matter.
The effected patients will be given the best possible treatment, and the hospital is doing its best to assuage concerns over medical safety.
