“Oppenheimer,” a three-hour epic about the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II, took home the top two prizes for best film and best director at the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday in addition to five other accolades.
Representing American theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, one of the highest-grossing films of 2023, also took home honors for editing, cinematography, original score, supporting actor Robert Downey Jr., and leading man Cillian Murphy.

In his victory speech, director Christopher Nolan, who had just won his first BAFTA, congratulated his team and actors.
“In the actual world, a wide range of people and organizations have fought valiantly to lower the total number of nuclear weapons in the globe… I do want to thank them for their efforts in accepting this,” he continued.
Murphy, like Nolan, had been the favorite to win his category and mentioned “the father of the atomic bomb” in his winning speech.
Murphy remarked, “Oppenheimer was this immensely naughty, complex character who meant different things to different people.”
“A monster to one person is a hero to another.” I adore movies because they provide us with a platform to acknowledge, explore, and analyze this complexity.
