Electricity tariff likely to increase amidst inflation in Pakistan

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is preparing to increase the electricity tariff, imposing more burden on the inflation-hit people of Pakistan. NEPRA is expected to hike the electricity tariff on account of fuel cost adjustment.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to Nepra for an increase of Rs 7.13 paise per unit of electricity for January.

CPPA demanded an increase in electricity prices in the context of the January fuel cost adjustment, consumers will have an additional burden of up to Rs66.77 billion on inflation-bitten consumers.

Nepra will hold a hearing on the petition to increase the price of electricity on February 23. The revised prices will not apply to KE consumers.

In January, the most expensive electricity was generated by diesel i.e. 10 crore units of electricity were generated at the rate of Rs45.60 per unit.

Furthermore, 75 crores of units of electricity were generated from furnace oil at the rate of Rs35 per unit in January.
