Rawalpindi administration fails to control prices as new price list issued

The Deputy Commissioner of Rawalpindi, Hasan Waqar Cheema, claimed that everyday consumable items were cheaper in Rawalpindi as compared to Islamabad.

The Rawalpindi’s deputy commissioner has issued a new notification of prices for daily consumable products, however, the local administration has failed to follow its price list.

However, Rawalpindi’s administration seems unaware of the pricing of daily consumption products such as sugar, meat, lentils, rice, milk, flour, vegetables, and fruits offered on the open market.

Price Control Committee (Consumer) remarked that the Punjab government is deeply concerned about the local administration’s poor performance in Rawalpindi. Rawalpindi has become the most costly city in the province due to poor governance, he asserted.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rawalpindi issued Notification No. (PWM/RWP/G-42), fixing the rice pricing at Rs300, however, rice in open market stores was selling for Rs420.

There is a significant price difference between government and open market rates. Deputy Commissioner (DC) has fixed the price of White Chana at Rs325 while one kilogram of White Chana was selling for Rs400 to Rs425 in the open market.

Surprisingly, the local government did not establish the prices of ‘atta’, ‘ghee’, sugar, and red chili, and stated in the notice that ‘atta’ prices were tied to the food department’s notification, whereas ‘ghee’ would be sold according to printed rates.

A 20-kilogram flour bag costs between Rs2800 and Rs3050 and a 1-kilogram ‘ghee’ costs between Rs490 to Rs510.

Talking to media persons, the DC said that 50 magistrates were monitoring the prices of food items in Rawalpindi district.

Agriculture Fair Price Shop and wholesale market had also been established on the special instructions of the Punjab Government to provide relief to the citizens, the DC added.

Hassan Waqar Cheema informed that the citizens would get food items at wholesale rates in Ramazan Sasta Bazaar set up outside Allama Iqbal Park on Murree Road.
