The Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt is poised to create history yet again as it gears up for the film’s official theatrical release across China from May 21, marking a new chapter for the country’s film industry on the international stage.
The Legend of Maula Jatt China release has created excitement among the film lovers as the acclaimed movie becomes the first Pakistani film to get entry into China’s highly restricted foreign film quota system. It was announced by Bilal Lashari, who said that it is a big development for Pakistani storytelling across the world.
The action-packed Punjabi-language movie was released in 2022 and became one of the highest-grossing movies in the history of cinema in Pakistan. Directed by Bilal Lashari, the film is a modern take on the cult classic Maula Jatt, starring Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi in lead roles. The film has been lauded for its cinematography, the strength of its performances, and the breadth of its production values.
The director told social media the release in China means more than a theatrical debut. “It’s a huge moment for Pakistani cinema and could open the gates for more local productions to enter international markets,” he said.
Over the years, Pakistan has had little presence on Chinese screens. Earlier, Parwaaz Hai Junoon was also screened in Chinese cinemas, but The Legend of Maula Jatt’s entry into the official quota system is a far bigger achievement.
Industry watchers say the release may help cement cultural ties and open up new opportunities for Pakistani films to reach audiences around the world.
