The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to introduce artificial intelligence education in public schools from March 2026, marking a major shift in the province’s education policy. Under the new plan, the KP schools AI curriculum will be introduced for students from grade six to grade twelve, aiming to equip learners with future-ready digital skills.
Officials from the Elementary and Secondary Education Department confirmed that artificial intelligence is currently not part of the existing computer science syllabus. As a result, the government will carry out substantial curriculum revisions to embed AI-related concepts across multiple grade levels.
Education department documents reveal that around 35 to 50 percent of AI-related content will be gradually integrated into different classes, ensuring students develop a basic understanding of emerging technologies while progressing through school.
Infrastructure and teacher shortages pose challenges
Despite the ambitious announcement, the rollout faces serious structural challenges. Official data shows that the province currently lacks 5,525 IT laboratories required to effectively teach artificial intelligence and related subjects.
This includes a shortage of 225 computer labs in higher secondary schools and more than 3,500 labs in middle schools. Without these facilities, experts warn that practical learning — a key requirement for AI education — may remain limited.
Another major hurdle is the lack of trained teaching staff. The education department has acknowledged that existing teachers do not have sufficient expertise in artificial intelligence, as the subject has never been formally taught at the school level in KP.
To address this gap, the government plans to recruit 7,555 IT teachers across the province. These educators will be specifically trained to deliver AI-related content and support students in understanding modern digital tools.
