Maryam Nawaz Katcha Operation clears criminal gangs after six weeks in riverine Punjab

The Maryam Nawaz Katcha Operation has cleared criminal gangs from riverine areas of Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan after six weeks of action. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the development during a high-level meeting on Saturday. She said the operation restored the state’s authority in areas long controlled by armed groups.

According to the chief minister, more than 500 criminals surrendered during the operation. This included 42 suspects from Rajanpur and 200 from Rahim Yar Khan. Importantly, some key gang leaders also laid down their weapons. She said the entire operation ended without any casualties among security personnel.

Moreover, she stated that no kidnapping for ransom or honey-trap cases were reported in the past 45 days. This shows a major improvement in law and order. Previously, these riverine zones had become no-go areas for police and residents lived in fear.

The operation involved strong coordination among several agencies. These included Punjab Police, Pakistan Rangers, Sindh Police, and intelligence departments. In addition, more than 1,700 police officers took part. They used drone surveillance, night vision cameras, and armoured vehicles. As a result, forces could reach hideouts located deep in sugarcane fields and river belts.

Authorities also recovered heavy weapons during the crackdown. These included rocket launchers, machine guns, pistols, grenades, and large amounts of ammunition. Meanwhile, officials destroyed hideouts and support networks of criminal groups. The chief minister added that surrendered suspects promised not to attack law enforcement again. However, they will still face legal proceedings under the law.

Furthermore, the Maryam Nawaz Katcha Operation highlighted cooperation between Punjab and Sindh authorities. The chief minister thanked Sindh Police and the Sindh government for their support in border areas. She said intelligence sharing played a key role in achieving success.

Alongside security steps, the Punjab government also announced a development plan for the region. Schools, hospitals, and technical institutes will be built. In addition, transport services and farmer support programmes will start soon. Officials believe these measures will improve living standards and prevent crime from returning.

Maryam Nawaz said the government will maintain its authority in the region. She added that residents of Katcha areas deserve the same facilities as people in other parts of Punjab.
