Ranbir Kapoor Lover Boy Roles End After Animal, Actor Opens Up About Career Change

For many years, Ranbir Kapoor lover boy roles shaped the actor’s public image in Hindi cinema. However, the Bollywood star now says his career took a major turn after starring in the action drama Animal. He credits director Sandeep Reddy Vanga for trusting him with a character far removed from the romantic leads he often portrayed.

Ranbir made these remarks during an audience interaction in Japan alongside Vanga. The event took place after a screening of Animal, which is set to release in Japanese theaters on February 13. The actor spoke openly about how the project challenged his comfort zone and pushed him toward a darker, more intense performance style.

Since his debut in Saawariya in 2007, Ranbir has built a strong reputation with films such as Barfi, Tamasha, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani, and Sanju. As a result, viewers often linked him with soft, emotional, and charming characters. Yet the shift away from those familiar traits began when he heard the script for Animal.

Ranbir explained that he found the role intimidating at first. Still, the director’s confidence convinced him to take the risk. According to the actor, he had mostly played coming-of-age and romantic characters before, but this film offered something entirely different.

He described his character, Ranvijay, as emotionally complex and fiercely protective of his family. Moreover, the role required him to explore volatile behavior and extreme reactions. Ranbir believes this emotional depth helped audiences worldwide connect with the story despite its intense themes.

In the film, Ranvijay is deeply affected by childhood trauma and struggles with a distant relationship with his father, played by Anil Kapoor. Consequently, an assassination attempt on his father sets off a violent path of revenge that drives the narrative forward.

The movie features a strong supporting cast, including Bobby Deol as the antagonist, along with Rashmika Mandanna and Triptii Dimri in key roles. Although the film sparked debate among viewers, it also drew massive crowds. Reports indicate that Animal crossed the ₹900 crore mark globally, placing it among the highest-grossing Indian films.

Meanwhile, the cultural impact of the character continues to grow. A sequel titled Animal Park is already in development, signaling that the era defined by Ranbir Kapoor lover boy roles may be fading. Instead, the actor appears ready to explore more diverse and demanding parts.

For industry watchers, this transition highlights a broader trend in Bollywood, where established stars increasingly experiment with unconventional roles. If Ranbir’s recent choices are any indication, his career may be entering a more versatile phase.
