4.8 magnitude earthquake jolts Multan, nearby areas: PMD

ISLAMABAD: A mild 4.8 magnitude earthquake was reported in Multan and other parts of Punjab on Tuesday afternoon, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Center, the earthquake originated at 1:05 pm on September 26 at a depth of 55 km.

The epicenter of the quake was 126 km west of Multan, and no major tremors were felt.

Earlier on September 4, the tremors of a 5.9-magnitude earthquake were felt in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi and areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A press release from the PMD said the quake originated at 9:56pm at a depth of 111 kilometres with its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region.

It said tremors were felt in Peshawar, Mansehra, Hangu, Abbottabad, Swat, Attock, Malakand, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad.

A day later, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake was again felt in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, causing panic among the people. The earthquake was felt in Bajaur, Khyber, Mohmand, and Malakand areas.

According to the Seismological Center, the depth of the earthquake was recorded at 10 kilometers, and the epicenter was near the border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
