ISLAMABAD: Stargazers in Pakistan and various parts of the globe will be able to see the year’s first supermoon on October 7, 2025, as a breathtaking astronomical spectacle set to illuminate the night sky.

The supermoon will be on next Tuesday when the Moon will be approaching Earth in its orbit, and it will look bigger and brighter than normal. The Moon this time will be about fifteen percent larger and 30percent brighter than its normal form.

This month, the Moon will be only 224,599 miles from Earth. This is the first supermoon in close to a year, with the previous one being seen in November 2024.

The next event will not be unique in 2025. The supermoons that are to follow are two: the one on November 5 and the one on December 5. Although the full moon in January 2026 will be a supermoon, it will not occur in the calendar year of 2025.

Three to four supermoons are seen every year, say astronomers, each of which is a breathtaking spectacle for amateur and professional observers alike.

Supermoon creates myths and misconceptions, too, as people start thinking that it creates natural disasters, unusual human actions, or misfortune.

This type of moon does contribute slightly more to tides, but it has no connection with earthquakes, crime, or insanity. Folklore would also describe supermoons as unusual omens related to werewolves, fertility, or divine power, but they actually arise a few times annually.

While the Moon would seem larger and more intense, it is safely far away. A supermoon is not an otherworldly phenomenon but merely a full moon occurring when the Moon is at its closest point in Earth’s orbit.
