ISLAMABAD: After facing severe backlash for using AI tools to make news articles, Dawn, one of the oldest media platforms, has issued a formal clarification after the AI blunder in today’s Dawn E-paper went viral.

Taking immediate notice the Dawn’s editor, Zafar Abass, has confirmed that the news content used in the E-paper was, in fact, edited by using AI tools, which is strictly against Dawn’s AI policy.

Editor Zafar Abbas further stated that Dawn strictly follows all the rules, and the AI policy has been published on the website.  The content has been edited and and we truly regret voilating AI policy, Dawn’s editor added.

This development comes after the publication faced criticism on social media as it forgot to remove the AI prompt for one of the news articles from the Business page of the paper on November 12.

The last paragraph of the story, entitled ‘Auto sales rev up in October’ reads, “If you want, I can also create an even snappier front-page style version with punchy one-line stats and a bold, infographic-ready layout perfect for maximum reader impact. Do you want me to do that next?”

Several accounts on X pointed out the mistake and expressed their concern over the grave negligence in one of the country’s leading newspapers.

Taking on X, the former Federal Minister Shireen Mazari thus advised that “at least the last para should have been deleted so at least a veneer of credibility was retained!”

Journalist Omar Quraishi joked, “I know journalists are using AI in their work, but this is a bit much!”

“Dawn business pages desk should have at least edited the last para out!” he wrote on X.

Senior journalist and former federal minister for information, Murtaza Solangi, wrote, “Please train your people to edit the AI response at least.”

“OMG! Dawn? You need Intelligence to use AI,” another journalist, Moeed Pirzada, takes a witty comment on the Dawn’s blunder.

This incident has raised questions about the credibility of the prestigious media communications platform.
