NADRA issues advisory on deactivating CNICs of deceased

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) requested all residents to erase computerized national identity cards (CNICs) for dead family members.

In an alert, NADRA asked residents to visit their local facility or use the Pak ID mobile app to update their family records.

Even though 7 million deaths were registered in union councils in March 2025, their ID cards were not deleted according to NADRA statistics.

Required documents

  • The deceased’s death certificate issued by the Union Council.
  • All available original NIC/CNIC/NICOP/POC/CRC cards of the deceased.
  • Undertaking/Affidavit (as per format given by NADRA e.g., NADRA

Steps to cancel the CNIC

  • Death Certificate: The officially computerized death certificate from the Union Council is to be attained.
  • Visit an NRC: Approach the nearest NRC, along with the required documents. You can find an NRC near you through the NADRA website.
  • Application Form: The family member, either the child, parent, or spouse, has to fill out the application form for cancellation provided by the NRC staff.
  • Submit documents: Completed form with the death certificate of the deceased and all original ID cards
  • ID card destruction: This is when a NADRA staff member physically destroys the deceased’s original ID cards to prevent misuse.
  • Receive certificate: You’ll receive a cancellation certificate after it has been processed.
