GILGIT BALTISTAN: Political temperatures have been rising across Gilgit-Baltistan, as the preparations for the 2026 Gilgit-Baltistan elections start reaching that last phase.

The political arena seems fully set now, with 403 candidates lined up across 24 constituencies, and the whole region is turning into a kind of hub for intense political activity. Based on the election details, GBA-2 Gilgit-II has basically come out as the biggest electoral battleground, with 40 candidates in the race.

Astur-II is also expected to get a tough contest, where 33 candidates are competing for victory. Political campaigns and corner meetings have really picked up momentum in Skardu, Gilgit, Diamer, Ghizer, Hunza, and Nagar, where major political parties and independent contenders are actively trying to rally supporters.

In the Baltistan division, constituencies are seeing even more election-related movement, and public interest is growing too. Observers are saying competition will likely stay particularly fierce in GBA-7 Skardu-I and GBA-10 Skardu-IV, because political groupings and local dynamics may end up deciding things.

At the same time, Ganche-III has been declared as the constituency with the least number of candidates, so that it looks comparatively calmer.

Political analysts think the unusually high count of candidates in some constituencies is linked to shifting political trends and also higher public participation.

Meanwhile, the places with fewer candidates may end up testing how strong traditional political influence really is, in practice not just in theory. As election day gets closer, public attention remains locked on the major political battles expected throughout Gilgit-Baltistan.
