LAHORE: The Punjab government has launched a massive housing scheme to build 57,000 affordable houses in the province for deserving families in ownership through easy installment plans.

The project is designed to provide standardized low-cost housing in the province under the supervision of the Punjab Housing Department, said a department spokesperson.

During the first phase, work on 20,000 houses at 41 shortlisted sites in Punjab will be initiated. The government has also sanctioned the transfer of shortlisted state land to the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency for this reason.

Residences will be constructed on government land in 24 districts with a diversified design and size. They consist of single-storey houses of 250 square feet in 16 districts, three-storey buildings with 530 sq. ft. in five districts, and four-storey buildings of 550 sq. ft. in three districts.

The Housing Department reported that the five-year project would have solar energy systems and rainwater harvesting to promote sustainable living.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with the private sector and the World Bank, with international standards of construction, safe facilities, and robust project monitoring.

The officials further stated that the program will ensure quality control at each stage and cater to residents’ needs with all the basic amenities to enhance their living standards.
