ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army has refused to negotiate with Imran Khan, the incarcerated founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, The Guardian reported.

Although Khan maintains that he is ready for talks with the army’s high command, the top military officials have made it clear that Khan will have to answer all court cases brought against him without expecting any favors from the army, the report stated.

Khan, who is currently detained at Adiala Jail, has not been in contact with the armed forces since his incarceration last year on May 09, 2023.

Nonetheless, Speaking from his jail cell, the former PM is on record with the desire to talk to the army leadership, and assures that any such engagement will be on principles and for the benefit of the people, and will not be for any compromises of principles that will destroy democracy in Pakistan.

It is expected that the Pakistan Army is not going to engage Khan in any negotiations because of the alliance between the military and politics which has always existed in the country.

PTI founder himself ascended into power in 2018 with the help of the military’s maneuvers, however, his relations with the top army elite went south in 2022 resulting in his ouster from power.

The former PM  is currently embroiled in countless lawsuits, all of which he attributes to the machinations of his political rivals, both military and civilian.

Still, he clings to the hope that he would be able to claim justice in the end and he does not rule out the possibility of becoming a prime minister again in the future as long as that is what the constituency wants.

Notably,  Khan has openly criticized the body of Pakistan’s military forces and many have perceived his arrest, detention, and even the charge against him as an effort to curtail his political ambitions. The episode has caused mass mobilization and human rights organizations have expressed their outrage.
