ISLAMABAD: The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) will provide free Wi-Fi in public places in Islamabad, but users will have to verify their identity before using the network.
According to the NTC, under the new system, users using free Wi-Fi will have to provide their name and mobile number, and a record of each connection will be kept to know which user was using the Wi-Fi at which place, a step necessary to strengthen security and protect against potential cyber threats.
Free Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed in high-traffic areas, including metro bus stations, central business districts and other public places.
According to the report, the NTC has collaborated with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant departments for faster implementation.
Officials stressed that identity verification is a responsibility of users as well as a must for the protection of public networks. The project is part of the government’s efforts to increase digital access and maintain strong cyber security in Islamabad.
