KARACHI: As monsoon clouds loom over the city, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has sounded a high alert and has completed all necessary preparations to keep port operations and cargo safe during the expected spell of heavy rains.
According to KPT sources, safety and operational measures have been taken in view of the arrival of the monsoon. Ships will be berthed safely and will be closely monitored during their stay in the port. The deployment of mooring lines and standby tugboats ensures that any emergency assistance can be provided promptly.
A KPT alert also highlighted that a standby pilot will be available round the clock to help navigate ships in deep seas in case of severe weather, posing minimal risk to maritime traffic.
“We have taken all precautionary measures to ensure the safety of cargo,” said a KPT spokesperson. Special attention is being paid to container yards and terminals, where empty containers will be stored at only two heights to reduce the risk of collapse during strong winds and heavy rains.
Furthermore, instructions have been issued for maintenance checks and standby generators to guarantee uninterrupted power supply, ensuring that port operations continue smoothly without any disruption.
The Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy monsoon rains in Karachi over the next few days, preparing the city and port authorities to deal with possible urban flooding and related challenges.
