PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government has decided to protest the removal of two major hydroelectric power projects from the energy plan by the federal government.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Energy and Power, Tariq Sadozai, penned a letter to Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari stating the disappointment of the KPK government over the removal of the hydropower projects.
The special Assistant terms this step as “victimization of the province” by the federal government.
“Both projects, 88 megawatt Gabral Kalam and 157 megawatts in Madyan, were initiated under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hydropower and Renewable Energy Programme,” the letter read.
The letter further writes that “Both projects are scheduled to be completed in the year 2027 with financial assistance from the World Bank,” according to the letter. Both projects were added to the plan with the consent of the NEPRA, Council of Common Interest (CCI), and the ECNEC.
“Removal of these projects by the system operator has been unlawful under the constitution,” the letter states.
“Under the supervision of the federal government, Mohmand Dam, Dasu, and Tarbela Extension-V have also been declared committees,” a KP official writes.
Tariq Sadozai has urged the federal government to reconsider the decision to exclude the projects.
