LAHORE: Heavy rain lashed Lahore and several other areas of Punjab around midnight on Sunday, bringing down the temperature and causing power outages.
According to the Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Ravi at 38 mm. Other areas also received heavy rainfall, with Gulberg receiving 36 mm, Samanabad 35 mm and Iqbal Town 34 mm.
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thundershowers led to power outages in several areas of the city, causing several power feeders to trip, resulting in power supply being suspended for hours.
Rain also lashed Mianwali, Okara, Tandlianwala, Renala Khurd and Ferozwala, where strong winds disrupted power supply and caused minor damage in some areas.
The fresh spell of rain has brought relief from the heat but has also caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, slowing down traffic and daily activities. Meteorological Department officials have predicted more rain and cold weather in upper and central Punjab in the coming days.
The Meteorological Department has predicted partly cloudy weather with rain, wind and thundershowers in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Mithi and surrounding areas, while a new cyclone named “Shakti” has formed in the northeast Arabian Sea.
A deep depression in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is moving west-southwestwards. The system is expected to affect the Sindh coastline, with strong winds and intermittent rain in some areas.
Officials have advised fishermen to be cautious and avoid venturing into the open sea as rough conditions are expected in the next 24 to 48 hours. Coastal residents have also been urged to remain alert and follow the updates issued by the PMD.
