LAHORE: In a recent development, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday instructed officials to take pragmatic steps against the beggar mafia, including creating a mobile app meant to help reduce beggary in Punjab.

The order arose during a hearing on a request for enforcement of the Anti-Begging Act. The petitioner noted that although legislation against the beggar mafia had already been passed in the province, government agencies had not successfully carried out the judicial orders.

The court stressed the necessity of complete enforcement of the legislation and ordered officials to present a progress report within three months.

The court ordered the creation of a mobile app and registration of FIRs against people who compel children into begging.

Additionally, the Lahore High Court ordered to build and utilize all ready existing functional rehabilitation centers and shelter houses for beggars. Emphasizing the necessity of prompt execution of its orders regarding the enforcement of the anti-begging legislation, the court was unhappy with the report of the Punjab Home Department.

Three months were added to the hearing’s suspension.
