LAHORE: To curb traffic accidents and public safety, the Motorway Police has launched a crackdown on speeding drivers, taking action against 54 drivers so far.
The recent campaign to control overspeeding is being put into action on most motorways, including the M-3, M-2, M-4, M-5, and Lahore-Sialkot motorways.
According to the motorway police spokesperson, four cases were registered on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway, 19 FIRs on the Lahore-Islamabad motorway M-2, five cases on the Lahore-Multan motorway M-3, six actually through the Faisalabad-Multan M-4 and 20 arrests were made on the Sukkur-Multan motorway M-5.
The speed limit on three-lane motorways is set at 120 km/h for light vehicles and 110 km/h for heavy ones. Exceeding these limits will attract penalties that could include fines or even being booked under an FIR.
Last September, the government revised traffic violation fines, increasing them by as much as 200% on motorways and national highways.
The newly revised fines include a Rs 2,000 penalty for overspeeding, Rs 5,000 for motorcyclists, cars and LTV drivers, and Rs 10,000 for HTV and PSV drivers. In addition, lane violations, wrong overtaking, and HID lights are all fined from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000
