KARACHI: A renowned Islamic scholar and cleric Mufti Tariq Masood has found himself in a controversy following his claims of alleged “grammatical errors in the Holy Quran”.

A video of him speaking at the Surrey Jamea Majid in Canada, went viral on social media, sparking criticism from the Muslim community, however, clearing his stance he apologized if his remarks had hurt the sentiments of Muslims.

He issued a public apology, adding that his words were misunderstood after social media users accused him of alleged blasphemy during the address in the mosque.

Mufti Tariq in a video discussed the concept of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) being ‘Ummi’ (unlettered), which he referred to from the Holy Quran, and said that sometimes the Sahabah [companions] made grammatical mistakes while writing the Quranic verses.

“Due to Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) inability to read and write, the mistakes remained incorrect and some of them still exist in the Holy Book,” he claimed. He also gave an example of a word in the Quran, arguing that it is grammatically incorrect but still written in the book.

Mufti Tariq Masood clarifies

Following the severe backlash and blasphemy accusations, Mufti Tariq Masood shared a follow-up video providing clarification on his earlier remarks considering the sensitivity surrounding the Quran and the Prophet (PBUH).

In a YouTube video, titled Mufti Sahab Ki Sareeh Lafzon Mein Mazrat, Mufti said that his statements were misunderstood and taken out of context. Rendering an apology to everyone whose religious sentiments offended, he reiterated his respect for the Holy Quran.

In a separate apologetic video, Mufti Tariq explained that he did not intend to challenge the divine nature of the Quran or question its authenticity. He emphasized that his discussion was focused on human errors that occurred during transcription by the Companions.

As the controversy unfolds, many scholars and religious personalities have expressed their disapproval and demanded the arrest of religious scholars for his blasphemous statement. Some users of social media urged to consider Mufti’s apology and clarification.

Nojawanan Millat-e-Tashiou Gilgit, a Shia youth organization, has lodged an application with the police against Mufti Tariq Masood for his deliberate remarks.

In a video message, TLP cleric Hassan Raza Naqshbandi urged the govt to register a blasphemy case, under Sections 295C and 295B, against Mufti Tariq Masud for allegedly insulting Allah, the Prophet (PBUH), and the Quran.
