Newly-appointed Supreme Court, high courts judges sworn in

ISLAMABAD: Six newly appointed Supreme Court judges and one ad-hoc judge took oath in a swearing-in ceremony at the apex court in Islamabad on Friday.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi administered the oath to them.

The new sworn-in judges include former Balochistan High Court (BHC) chief justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar, ex-Sindh High Court (SHC) chief justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, and SHC senior puisne judge Salahuddin Panhwar.

Peshawar High Court (PHC) judge Shakeel Ahmad, ex-Islamabad High Court (IHC) chief justice Aamer Farooq, and ex-PHC Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim were also among them.

Meanwhile, CJP Afridi also administered an oath to Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb as an acting apex court judge.

The ceremony was attended by the judges of the Supreme Court and lawyers.

The JCP, on Monday, approved the elevation of a total of six new judges to the apex court amid a boycott by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers and two senior SC judges.

The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification on Thursday notifying the appointment of six judges who were elevated to the Supreme Court from various high courts after the president’s approval.

The judges’ elevation issue faced opposition from PTI’s Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Senator Ali Zafar and two SC judges, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar had boycotted the JCP’s meeting.

Separately, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori administered the oath to acting SHC Chief Justice Junaid Ghaffar in an oath-taking ceremony at the Governor’s House in Karachi.

In addition to that, the acting Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, Sarfaraz Dogar also sworn in at Aiwan-e-Sadr. President Asif Ali Zardari administrated the oath to acting chief justice IHC.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi administered the oath to Justice S.M Atiq Shah as acting chief justice of Peshawar High Court.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Governor’s House in Peshawar, was attended by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Judges of the Peshawar High Court, lawyers, and officials also attended the ceremony.
