ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Saba Talpur took oath as a Member of National Assembly (MNA) on Monday after winning the NA-213 Umerkot I by-election.
The oath was administered by Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa Shah after which she signed the assembly’s registration roll.
Talpur won the seat by defeating independent candidate Lal Chand Malhi, who was supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and others.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated Saba Talpur on her victory in the NA-213 by-election.
In a statement, he said that Saba Talpur’s victory reflects the trust of the people of NA-213 in the Pakistan Peoples Party.
The President expressed hope that Saba Talpur would meet the expectations of the people of her constituency in accordance with the ideology of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
He stressed that Saba Talpur should work for the solution of the problems of her constituency and the welfare of the people.
In April, Saba Talpur won the NA-213 (Umerkot) by-election with a margin of over 74,000 votes.
According to the results from all 498 polling stations in the constituency, the PPP candidate won the seat after securing 148,965 votes, followed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and independent candidate Lal Malhi from other opposition parties.
Lal Malhi could only secure 74,515 votes. The NA-213 seat fell vacant after the death of PPP MNA Nawab Yousaf Talpur.
