ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Monday filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for not implementing the reserved seats ruling.

Senior lawyer Salman Raja, in its contempt plea, made the ECP respondents. PTI leader urged the apex court to initiate the contempt of court proceedings against the electoral body for non-implementation of the SC’s verdict on the reserved seats.

The PTI’s lawyers requested the court to direct the ECP to implement the order on reserved seats

Earlier, the Supreme Court issued a clarification to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over the reserved seats’ ruling, stating that the amendments to the Election Act, 2017 cannot undo its judgment in the case of the reserved seats.

The court also ordered the election watchdog to implement the initial verdict in letter and spirit to avoid repercussions.

On July 12, a 13-judge full bench of the apex court had declared that the Imran Khan-founder party was eligible to receive reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the national and provincial assemblies, potentially making the PTI the single largest party in both houses of Parliament.
